A Few Things to Check on Your Deep Water Well Before Calling a Repair Technician

by Sebastian Warren

If the water coming into your house is from a well on your property, having a pump that doesn't work can be a big problem. When you have a deep well, it can be more difficult to repair; it would be best to contact a professional well repair technician. However, before you make the call, there are a few things you should check that you can fix on your own. This will save you from having to pay for a service call to find out you could have done the repair.

Electric Problem

The first thing you want to check is that there is electricity getting to the pump. You will notice that the pump does not cycle on when you turn on the water in the house. Check the circuit breaker; you should turn it off and then back on to make sure it is completely engaged. If this is not the problem, check the wires around the pump. Replaced anything that is frayed or has the coating removed. You should also use a voltmeter on the wires to check that there is voltage getting to them.

Clean Parts

If you are sure there is power to the pump, shut it off and clean the pressure switches. Oil and dirt can coat them and prevent the pump from turning on. While you are at the motor, make sure that the pump is primed by pulling out the priming pipe. There should be water inside. If not, you will need to reprime the system. The owner's manual will have directions on how to do this as there are different methods for different brands and types. You should also make sure that the pipe is clear, that it is not clogged. Check all strainers and filters too, clean them to allow the water to keep flowing.

Replace Starter Switch or Motor

After you have cleaned everything, if the pump still is not working, it is time to replace either the starter switch, or the motor. These are generally simple things you can swap out with a new part. Of course, if the motor does come on, but you are still not getting any water, the problem lies within the well and the submerged parts of the pump.

Once the problem is out of your reach and sight it is time to contact services such as Elk Point Drilling Corp. Explain what is or is not happening and be sure to tell them what you have already tried. This will keep them from trying the same fixes and get them to the route of the problem faster.
